An issue that plagues proponents of a reliable grid is the intermittency of wind turbines and how it might affect energy prices and availability. In an article entitled, “Can we continue to have reliable electricity if we produce more wind power, since the wind does not always blow?” the Union of Concerned Scientists raises important questions regarding the viability of large scale integration of solar and wind power into the United States’ grid. A federal study referred to in the analysis details how wind and solar could provide half of the United States’ power by 2050. The study indicates that new power lines, better batteries, and better scheduling and forecasting tools are imperative for wide scale renewable power implementation.
The above improvements all have two things in common. They are expensive and will take time to integrate into our current energy matrix. However, Leviathan Wind Energizer offers one piece of a solution for the intermittency of wind turbines and will help them fit into the grid better. The Wind Energizer™ is a device that reduces the average cut in (start up) speed of wind turbines by 1.2 meters/second. This means that power can be produced more consistently throughout the day. The device accomplishes this by passively enhancing the air flow into wind turbines to increase power and decrease the stress on the blades, thereby increasing the system’s lifespan and reducing downtime.
Simulations and prototypes have shown that the Wind Energizer can increase system output and revenues by at least 20-40%. This significant development in wind power has the capability to make millions of square kilometers of land available for wind farms that were previously considered economically unfeasible due to lower than optimal wind velocities. This may enable more strategic placement of turbines closer to high energy demand areas. Additionally, the capital investment for the Wind Energizer is a relatively small investment per turbine, and can be adapted to any wind turbine from any manufacturer.
This design innovation has the potential to integrate wind power with much greater efficiency and stability into the electricity grid. Even though “the wind does not always blow”, turbines enhanced with the Wind Energizer will be able to take advantage of even lower wind speeds and produce energy more dependably. Finally, research on the Wind Energizer indicates that its use will reduce turbine wear and maintenance, adding longevity and stability to the capital returns on this promising investment. These advantages make the Wind Energizer a cheap, feasible investment for any turbine.
